hey guys,

I was just sitting here listening to my mix this weekend at Vibez, it was a great night, and real fun mixing out, Im using Final Scratch which is wicked, love the diversity of music you can mix, but was wondering if I would be better of using the time coded CD's with the CDJ's rather than mixing with the timecoded vinyl and mix on technics.

Until i went to hawaii i always thought Technics were the best decks ever, but I got to admit, MetalX introduced me to his Vestax decks, and the pitch was really accurate, so much easier to mix with than Technics, so I was wondering if the CDJ's pitch is as accurate or more accurate then the technics or even the Vestax.

cheers for your info, beleive it or not Ive never mixed with CDJ's :smiley9: even thought I love digital MP3's i still mix them with technics

I've never mixed with a CDJ so far but I think about buying a Pioneer CDJ 800 later this year... problem is, I never tested one and I fear it might be a flop, after all it's about 400 pounds.

its like using different computers or driving different cars, takes a bit of getting used to but after a while you can make em do what you need them to do. anything that reproduces vinyl is always going to be easier if you were brought up on vinyl and i gotta say that FS and Serato do it pretty amazingly. admittedly i havent used cdjs that much but when i did i just had to get used to the resistance of the drives and the pitch action and now that i think about it, it may not matter which one you use (cdj or dex) because every deck is a bit different from the next one depending on the condition of the drives. lol, i once djd at this club where the drives on the decks were so weak you had to hand start every record, oh what fun haha.

i think its also a matter of convenience too. as chris pointed out, how much do cdjs weigh and how easy are they to transport versus FS or Serato. also, how much of a hassle it might be to set up during a gig. with Serato, its not that fun lol.

sorry, not much of an answer in there

never used final scratch/ rane serato - how does the sound qulaity compare to vinyl?
only ever download a tune if i can't find it on vinyl anywhere but that said i've been downloading tunes more & more recently, mainly house & techno. been dj ing at a mate's house night he runs at the medicine bar in shoreditch over the past few months, and using cds increasingly - partly because one turntable doesn'tseem to give any signal to the mixer at times. have to say that the pioneer 1000s are proposterously easy to use though i don't have a pair in my bedroom, but i'm not apprehensive about using them 'live,' even though it is nice to be able to hear which tunes go well with each other when i'm mixing in my bedroom.
i ought to get saving for a pair of cdjs, even though i'd use vinyl where possible.

and yes, i agree with metalx; most formats/brands of equipment are easy to use once you've practised on them for a bit; got vestax myself, but don't have too much problem using technics, anymore at least

although the feel of serato is almost indistinguishable from vinyl (it is a vinyl controller afteral), there is one advantage of cdjs i thought about today. you can use all your cds anytime with a cdj, with serato you gotta worry about importing wavs and sucking up your cpu memory, which could be a crappy situation while your djing live. ive noticed this with my serato, takes too long to import and use in a live context without worrying about being able to run all your programs at once - at least not on my old ass mac powerbook lol

Next question:

What's easier to mix, Liquid or Atmospheric D&B?

For me it's Atmo cause most tracks got pure beat outros so no grappling with outros which aren't really outros cause lots of Liquid tracks maintain the track's melody/theme and sometimes even the bass til the very end (Redeyes tunes for example... exact opposite of that style is Nookie with his 3 minute beat-only outros :smiley2: ).
I spend much more time to find suitable combinations of Liquid tunes than I spend on Atmo combinations :smiley18:
