Justa quick one.

Went to see Dj prewiere form Gang Starr play alongside Dj Format
and Killa Kella the other night in a brand new venue.

The sound system was all wrong. My ears might be getting old but
there was a distinct lack of bottom end and a definate excess of
midrange. Just the type that deafens people and makes
communication impossible. I have noticed this in clubs in the past.
Over driven systems, distortion, bad acoustics.

Hiring a top line Dj is not cheap, so why are no sound checks carried
out (as with a band) rather than somebody arriving fresh from the
'champagne lounge' and cranking it who knows.

When Bukem and Conrad play they sound ace if the balance is bang
on and you can hear the lyrics. When its wrong it might as well be
me spitting lyrics, or beefy.

You can have the best studio gear in the world and be the best
engineer. If the final reproduction gear is mediocre nobody will know.

Any comments on this would be interesting as would opinions on the
best system you have heard. Also do you think being under the
influence makes a difference to how you listen/hear(?) and is it
possible to tailor productions to that environment.( As it is possible to
create a system to match your productions (valve))

Cheers.

your right, i was out last night and my ears are still ringing, eskimo noise used to rock the place, if the place has a sh*t sound system, it shows how much the promotoer cares about quality sounds in my mind, like you say, to play good sounds on a sh*t system is a real shame, and no good for your hearing either.
