View Full Version : Logic Q’s....Loads....

Ok fellas, loads more questions on Logic here to keep you going for a bit;

1) LFO’s (Soft Synths)

When using the EXS24, ES1 & ES2 (Think these all have the same function) how to do the following;

a) Modulate the LFO for the filter…… All I want to do is adjust the depth/intensity of the amount of the LFO modulating the filter’s cut-off (can this be automated also?).

b) Change the sync time/division of this LFO (16ths, 8ths etc)

c) Change the waveform this LFO uses (square, sine, saw etc)

d) Can I put a delay on the LFO…. To make it wait a slight pause before it kicks in?

e) Can I have more than 1 LFO modulating the filter at the same time with different settings for depth, waveform, etc?

2) Envelopes (Amp & Filter)

EXS24, ES1, ES2

a) How do I modulate the amp envelope…Can’t remember which synth I was using but the amp envelope sliders didn’t have any effect….Do they need to be enabled using the mod-matrix thing in the middle of the screen, & if so what’s an ideal setting to enable maximum control of the parameter (So full values can be reached)?

b) Same question as above but for the filter envelope (think I’ve got this to work, but could do with it clarifying please!)

3) Compressors (Logic’s own, or VST)

What’s a decent software compressor for use in Logic….. I tried using the silver compressor (which I thought would be ok) and the end result was absolutely terrible when I put a simple drum break through it…..
The thing didn’t seem to behave at all like a ‘real’ compressor would….and totally destroyed the input sound and turned it into something that sounded way over processed, and totally un-useable (no matter how subtle the amount of compression I added). However setting my h/ware compressor to the same/ideal settings (with the same break) when I got home the results were fantastic…. What’s that all about?

4) Delay Plug-ins

Anybody know of a delay effect plug in that lets you programme the repeat patterns /sequence of the delayed notes….. Most of the one’s in Logic only seem to have regular patterns for the repeats (with some groove control to compensate)…. There’s one in Soundforge from what I remember….’Multi-tap delay’ I think it’s called that lets you programme the positioning of the repeats…..

5) Arpegiator

a) How do connect an arp to a soft synth….and how much control do I have over it’s parameters?

b) Can I turn the arp ON/OFF using an NRPN, or a CC message, and insert this into my sequence if I don’t want all notes to be arpegiated? If so what CC or NRPN numbers do I use?

c) Is there any VST/other arp’s you can use in Logic

6) Red-lining

How do I do this in Logic….. If I distort a signal in Logic’s mixer (send the levels up into the red). Upon bouncing the track down to audio (because the signal is being sent digitally) it doesn’t sound right (nasty digitally distorted noise).
However at home distorting something on my analogue desk gives the signal a nice warm sound, with a good bit of growl in the background…. How can I achieve this without using a distortion plug-in?

7) Tape Emulation

Is there a plug-in within Logic to do this (I know there used to be one in Cubase which was quite good)

Think that’s about it for now…but I know there’s been loads of other thing’s stressing me out with Logic this weekend, so get ready for round 2 when I remember what they all were…….

Thanks to anybody who answers this lot…….trust me it will all be put to use and not going in one ear and straight out of the other…..

Cheers

Hi. This is my first post here.

I am a Logic user and have a couple of answers to your questions. I am
not in front of my equipment right now so I can give you a full rundown
on all your questions. I am not claiming to be an expert, but I know a
few things.

3 - Compressors

I use the Waves stuff. I own Waves Gold. The only downside is the Waves
stuff doesn't allow for sidechaining in Logic. I can find some use for
the Logic compressor but generally I reach for the Renaissance
Compressor.

6 - Redlining

In digital audio, any time you approach 0dBFS level you are achieving
the maximum level allowable. There is no number higher than Zero. Since
the audio signal can't exceed Zero, anything that would (or could) go
beyond it is chopped off since there is no way to do anything with
it. ....so you get that distorted clipped, chopped,
fizzy-crackly sound.

7 - Tape Emulation

Man, I wish the Crane Song Phoenix was available as a VST or AU for Logic.

There is the Thermal Pack
http://www.levelgroundmedia.com/products.h tml and they have
a demo download. I didn't care for it but they're gonna get it sounding
good before long, I bet.

ez blood,

the first questions about soft synths and lfo's are all possible im pretty sure, i dont use the vst instruments enough to be honest cos of my hardware here.

when you acess the automation do you do it from the matrix or from the arrangement page?

hhhmmm i cant say ive had too much of a problem with compressors, but once again im using hardware, so its never a big problem.

what version of logic you using mate?

dont forget any plugins in sound forge and cubase can be used in logic, just throw the .dll's into your vst folder, then you can use those plugins you like.

redlining, hhhmm flexoffset is right, digital distortion is basically clipping, its tottally different to analogue distortion, digital distortion basicaly cuts wavs to a square wav.

you have a thing called THD it stands for total harmonic distortion, analogue sound has a different THD to digital sound, its all about the harmonics and the distortion of harmonics, analoge harmonic distortion affects every third harmonic which is why you get a warm sound from vavle amps etc, digital harmonic distortion effects every second harmonic, which is why digital sound is actually a square wav, its just the way sample rates etc affect sound http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley10.gif

unfourtunately i m not an expert with Logic at all mate, tell me, why are you converting to logic now, bit late arent ya, or you thinking of buying a mac http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley5.gif

sorry i cant help you more man :smiley4:

Cheers Flex (& welcome aboard mate).

I'm noticing these things in Logic more so now that i'm trying to get a mate of mine upto speed who's new to all this production thing (as he only has Logic, no hardware). I myself only really use hardware (even hardware sequencer for some things...).

Will try the thingsyou bothwrote this weekend and see how i get on.

Cheers
