Hi all,

Can somebody tell me how to do the following in Logic…

I’m trying to teach a mate how to use Logic exclusively, and as it isn’t something I use for my own projects in the same way that he does I’m struggling to get some simple things to work…..

Say I load up an insert effect (i.e. the Logic Tape Delay, Space echo), anybody who’s used this effect will know the craziness you get by simply adjusting, and turning up the feedback level, so it’s probs a good example to use here…..

If I want to automate the feedback level, I can obviously do this using the track automation and draw in as much random madness as desired, but what do I do if want to control the feedback level using a knob on my controller keyboard, or by using the mod wheel in real time…..?

What I therefore need to know is what CC (Controller Change) number is used for the parameters of such effects, or better still how I can assign a controller number to a parameter (which is probs a more useful option due to the millions of different parameters you seem to get on software plug-ins these days)…..

Am I missing something obvious here in Logic, is there a simple way to set up insert effects so I can modulate them using the knobs/wheels on a keyboard?

Any help with this would be a god send…

Nice one mate..... let us know how you get on.....

I've just thought of an idea actually that might work...

1) Record on the channel

2) Move a parameter on the effect whilst recording

3) Check the event list and see if any cc's have appeared in the list....

4) Use that CC onthe keyboard

If nothing shows up in the listtho, that's when i'll start worrying....

no you can definately get the number then just use the corresponding midi controller on the keyboard, pretty sure thats how it works man http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley5.gif

anyway ive emailed my mate whos the boy with logic, hopefully he will feel sorry for us and check up on us every now and again and drop in some info http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley36.gif

Just got a mate to try this over the phone and it didn’t work…

He set up some simple automation using one of the Logic insert fx and then checked the event list after and nothing gets added…..

Shiz…… Any ideas what else to try?

heres what my mate says:
<DIV>the answer to controlling fx with midi controllers in logic as easy</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>if you load an effect into logic eg the tape dealy, then jump to your hyperdraw page and check out the 127 controller map page, you will see that tape delay now uses cc's 80-94, so you can use an outboard midi device to control it, unfortunatley it doesn't help you by informing you which parameter is mapped to which cc so its trial and error to find the feedback etc, but it does stay consistent each time you load the plug.</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>ok thats workable - but - it only works for the first 3 plugs in a chain after that logic runs out of allocated cc's</DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<DIV>a work around is to route the audio output of the channel to a bus and then use the first 3 units there for automation etc etc - but frankly it's all a bit tedious when you got lots running</DIV>

Nice one mate..... i had a flick through an old Logic 4 manual last night and that said just about the same....

As long as i can figure out which CC relates to what parameteri can always make a list forthe most commonly used plug-ins.

Cheers

It's easy to find which parameter controls what ...

I'll try to put a screenshot to show you but it'll be a while. Make sure you click exactly where I have the little dots.

There's a list of all the Fader Values of all the stuff in Logic. I'll have to dig around and find it again.

1. Make sure you have 'show automation' selected from the menu

2. Then click in the area that I have called 'A' to bring up the list of things that can be automated for that particular track.

3. Once you've got that, simply go over to the left a little .. near
the left edge of the arrange window, (I have it marked 'B') and on
macintosh, hit either 'control' or 'option' while double clicking in
that blank area. The fader value will show up ... it's not a CC # but a
fader value.

You might have to click around just a little till you find the exact spot but it's very easy to do.
