surely ive said it? , im wanting to know is there more to it than just laying it down , a freind of mine thinks you have to add portamento ????to the beats etc etc ..... not quite sure what he's on about , another geeza i know reakons its all to do with the velocity of each knote, but these guys dont write breaks , they just assume.......... is this a drum n bass site??????http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley36.gif

haha your funny, welcome to the site melly, yes this is a d'n'b production site, before we can give you advice you need to shed some light on what equiptment and experiance you have, i can tell you ways of making bad breaks but not sure if youve got the equiptment or software.

me personally i sample breaks, slice them in recycle and load them into my sampler, i normally layer 3 or more breaks and build them in the matrix in logic audio.

yo tobes.

at the minute im using a jomox airbase99 /roland 707/mackie 1604 mixer , and a vst sampler (kontact) all via cubase, ive been writing tunes for about 4 years now, mainly techno, but those days are gone now, started with acid pro then onto reason now cubase ;) im using version sx1.5, tis the dogs danglies me tinks lol....., ive been slapping breaks into the kontakt vst , is wicked like ,but theres only so far you can go that way , i need more controll over the breaks , they probably wont sound as good building them myself , but one has to be writing them ;) anyway

cheers

Ok Here's a basic tip;

Programme a 16th note hat roll, emphasise/increase thevelocity of hits on the 3rd beat. Move some of the notes slightly out of time (forward for a more relaxed rolling feel, backward for a more frantic feel).

Mess about with the velocities of all hits, slight variences (not too much)

Dupicate the sequence, and assign it to another hit (say a closed hat, shaker etc), and move the sequence slightly after (or before if you like) the original sequence. This (if used with the right hits) will give youthatshuffling type sound.

Other than that, fill you break up with different snares (some bright, some dull) all at different velocities and slightly in/out of time. Make hits trigger off each other so you get some real movement in your pattern

As you can tell, there are no fixed rules.... just get something basic up and running and experiment.

Personally i prefer to cut up funk breaks and re-program them, and then layer hits like i've described above on top. Just be careful that your programmed patterns follow a similar pattern to your chopped up loops and you should be half way there.

Soz this is basic but not sure what level you're at, but by all means give me (or anyone on this board) a shout if you get stuck.

No probs, like i said that's a 'VERY' basic guide to getting something up and running.

If you're using and chopping up proper breaks, try to take note of how 'out of time' some of the hits are that you're chopping out, and make sure when you re-sequence the loop you move your hits to the same positions. This way you'll get that looser/human feel to your breaks rather than everything being super tight and rigid (which can work also !!!!!).

ez mate,

you want to get a program called recycle by propellerheads, its the muts nuts for chopping breaks and then loading them into a hardware or virtual sampler, like foki is saying about watching where the beats are dropping, in recycle you can chop the breaks and set the bpm, eq's, gates etc, but then you can transfer all the samples and the midi file straight into cubase, once you load up the midi file you can just adjust thesamples in the matrixto your preference, but atleast then its allready layed out so you are half way there, once thats done i normally asigne each sample to a seperate filter and really mess with the sounds,unfourtunaely i use logic audio so i cant explain how to do it in cubase but it must havea virtual sampler installed.

good luck matey
