I have a Pentium 4 1.7GHz, 384 MB of RAM,a Hard Disk of 40 GB (half empty) and a Windows XP Pro (pirate). Can anyone tell me what can cause the computer to take nowadays 20 (!) minutes to start up? Is it Bill Gates?

Cant remember where i heard this, but i think there are some startup and shutdown options you can change in XP to speed it up a bit...??? http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley5.gif

two things to try, go to start/programs/startup delete all programs that are in the startup menu, they dont need to be in their, any program in there is booted with the pc and will use your memory and processor even though your not using them.

second thing to check goto start/run type "msconfig" then push enter, be cvarefull what you change here but you can go to the start up window and switch even more programs off that are botting up with the pc.

good luck mate, but maybe you need a format, also defrag your hard disk mate :smiley2:

edit: oooops just realised i said delete all the programs in the start menu i meant sturtup menu http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley36.gifEdited by: Tobes

also see what services are running by going to control panel,Administratve tools, services. You will then see a list of services installed on your system.right clicking on these will give you the option of either disabling the service,to put the service on manual, whereby it will only start up when you actually need it,or automatic where it starts up with the computer each time you boot it.Now uncle Bill, seems to think we need a lot of these services running when we dont. And if your not using them then your resources are being hogged for no reason.

If im not allowed to post this site here then let me know and ill remove it.it has lots of info on the services running on xp .

and make sure to download the descriptions reg file as once you put this in your registry there will be a lot more info on what the services actually are before you disabe them.Youll find the reg files here.
