So far ive been using loops that people have already made but i want to start making my own beats, ive tried in reason on the redrum but the sound i want is not coming out, it ends up sounding like a house beat, does anyone know or has got a link where i can find out some info and help in doing this.. or is there a piece of sofware which makes it all easier

Hi Crazygit1,

If I remember rightly from another post you're using Cubase as well as Reason. So Probably the best thing to do is to load all your samples into Redrum as usual, the just use the midi sequencer in Cubase to trigger the sample instead of the Redrum pattern sequencer.

The main reason that the Redrum sequencer isn't that great for instead Drum'n' Bass beats is that it default to a run on 16 steps(1 bar of 16ths), whereas usually for drum and bass you’d want at least 32 steps (2 bars of 16ths). You can set that up by changing the number of steps on Redrum, but it's just so much easier to do in Cubase.

If you get stuck sequencing from Cubase then post back and I'll see what I can do, but dive in and have a go first...http://www.itstooloud.com/webwiz/smileys/smiley4.gif

You said you've been using loops, do you mean breakbeat loops etc ?

If so chop them up using a wave editor into individual hits/samples, re-sequence the original groove by assigning one sample to individual keys and then develop it further by adding a bit of variation to the original pattern. Try layering your own additional hits, etc.

Can't help you with Reason specific stuff, I don't use it myself but the process is the same no matter what software you use.

Don't be afraid to throw in some off beat hats 'n snares. I've always found that helps add some flare to a break.:smiley2:
