oh neither sound forge or wavelab are like cubase sx at all, cubase is a sequencer, you can run multiple tracks at once with a sequencer, wave lab and sound forge are audio editors you can only work with one sound at a time.
if you have been offered wavelab than thats great, but you cant build tunes with it, but you can make sounds to use for building tunes, hope that makes sense. http://www.itstooloud.com/smileys/smiley10.gif

wicked mate, sounds like more fun then.. is wavelab good for putting in vocals and changing them etc or would soundforge be better... in wavelabcan you slow and speed up tempo ona loop then export, what about reversing a loop...

ahhh ....but wavelab has that lovely rack , and you can actually multitrack edit in it , (cool edit flashbacks anyone? )
about the rack .... you can realtime proccess your audio and record what your doing ... ( so do other programs i know )
but having 8 slots for fx ... and the really good thing is you can change the order of the rack by just dragging the name of the plugin to the slot you want on the fly .... what??
but the others are right, nothing like sx .... but a perfect complementary ...
the multitrack work pretty interesting as well , but that's for you to find out ...
you will get more colors into your music if you use various software ... each have their pluses .. and of course you would have a sequencer of choice . :smiley2:
my "little grain of sand" ---> aka .02 cents worth
but it sound better in spanish

if you have cubase you want to start collecting vst plugins, you can use them as instruments in sequencers like cubase, stuff to look out for are absynth, thats a wicked vst, the novation stuff like the v station and the bass station.
spectrosonics atmosphere has some great sounds but can control it very much, also have a look for recycle so you can learn how to chop your beats and load them ionto cubases internal sampler mate.
just keep tinkering mate, you going in the right direction. :smiley2:
